Fortalecimiento familiar
Belonging through Books
Belonging through Books is a program that aims to help families have conversations about race, racism, gender, LGBTQ inclusion, diversity and standing up against unfairness.
The 2024-25 season is accomplished in partnership with Dr. Lori A Watson of Trabajo de carrera y Distrito Escolar Unificado del Valle de Napa. The program was formerly known as Rainbow Family League.
Belonging through Books (BtB) is a bilingual parent/caregiver education program that supports families in talking about:
- Identidad propia y familiar
- Reconocer similitudes y diferencias
Belonging through Books families meet together in a group session with Dr. Lori and First 5 at a trusted location in their community (a school Family Resource Center, for example). The conversations are a mix of presentations and an open dialogue to share experience and learn together, and they are hosted in the evenings to accommodate work schedules, with food and childcare provided.
Participating families also receive monthly equipment bags with thematically appropriate books to read with their kids to practice the skills the team is learning.
Presentations and discussions paired with the children’s books and family activities aim to support parents/caregivers in becoming more confident and courageous when talking about race, racism, LGBTQ inclusion, and advocacy with their children.
During the 2024-25 school year, First 5 Napa County is partnering with Napa Valley Unified School district to bring BtB to the district’s TK families!
