Harriet Gets Carried Away by Jessie Sima

From the author and illustrator of Not Quite Narwhal comes a sweet story about a little child who loves dressing up and goes on an imaginary adventure while going to the market. There are not enough books out there that represent same sex parents, and this one has two dads. The book is not about the fact that they are same sex parents in any way, which is so refreshing to see. Available at Napa County Library.

Physical Activity

If you have balloons around the house, blow a few up and play “keep it up” (this is a fun way to get kids moving, particularly on a rainy day). Throw the balloon up in the air and take turns hitting it to keep it from touching the ground. Practice counting by taking turns counting how many times you can hit it before it touches the ground.

Imaginary Play

Dress up in costumes like Harriet. Put on a play or act out being different animals. Act like the animals you see in the book, such as a penguin, an orca whale, a pigeon, a wolf, or a lion.
