Rainbow: A First Book of Pride by Michael Genhart
A great book for young children to introduce them to the meaning of the colors on the rainbow flag.
Activity
We have already shared a few activities that could go well with this book. First, a rainbow mobile (first shared with Our Rainbow).
Alternately, your child could make a “me flag” with your child (first shared with Not Quite Narwhal).
A new idea is a rainbow ribbon wand for children to play with and/or a great addition to any pride parade.
Easy Ribbon Wand with Shower Curtain Rings
When reading this book, we recommend explaining that some rainbow flags include brown and black stripes, and they are meant to symbolize diversity and inclusion. The original rainbow flag created by Gilbert Baker did not include these stripes, but many people prefer seeing this flag that is intentionally inclusive of communities of color.
