The Family Book by Todd Parr
This book – in typical Todd Parr illustrations and fashion – celebrates many different types of families, including two mom families, two dad families, families with stepparents, families who adopt children, families with one parent, etc. Available at Napa County Library.
Activity
Invite your child to make their own Family Book. Use this template or just make a book with several blank pieces of paper. Title the book “My Family Book”. Invite your child to include anyone they love or consider family (e.g., parents, siblings, extended family, close friends, pets, teachers). Encourage them to use one page for each person and have them draw specific details for each person (e.g., hair color, skin color, eye color, favorite clothing). Also, ask them what they would like to write to describe the person or what they like to do with this person. Write something for each person. For example, “This is my Grandma Rosa and she loves gardening” and have them draw flowers on the picture of Grandma Rosa. Or “this is my sister Ruby, and we like to ride bikes together.”
When the book is all done, invite your child to “read” the book to you or their siblings or make a video to share with everyone they included in the book.
